P3 helps shape the future of automated public transport – in the Interreg project CAMINO-2

WRITTEN BY

How do self-driving shuttles move from isolated pilot trials into reliable, scalable public transport services? This is the question at the heart of CAMINO-2, a transnational project co-funded by the European Union under the Interreg North-West Europe (NWE) 2021–2027 programme, in which P3 participates as a project partner.

The challenge CAMINO-2 addresses

While automated mobility has demonstrated its technical potential in numerous pilots, transport authorities and operators now face a different challenge: moving from demonstration projects to reliable, scalable public transport. CAMINO-2 bridges this strategy-to-practice gap in deploying Shared Automated Vehicles (SAVs) across North-West Europe – moving from isolated pilots to resilient, low-emission public transport.

The project’s approach

To achieve this, CAMINO-2 pursues three priorities: co-creating an adaptable SAV Blueprint Action Plan for procurement, governance and scaling, validating deployment through transnational, real-world Living Labs, and building lasting capacity through an NWE-wide Ambassador training programme.

P3’s contribution

Within CAMINO-2, P3 leads the development of the SAV Blueprint Action Plan (SAV-BAP). This includes analysing the European SAV ecosystem, deployment models, operational requirements and regulatory frameworks.

A strong transnational partnership

CAMINO-2 brings together ten partners from seven countries of the NWE programme area. These are, from Belgium, Multitel (as Lead Partner), De Lijn and PAVE Europe; from Germany, P3 and VHH Hamburg; from France, RATP; from the Netherlands, the City of Helmond; from Luxembourg, LuxMobility; from Ireland, Future Mobility Campus Ireland; and from Switzerland, ROSAS.

Duration and funding

The project runs from 1 January 2026 to 30 June 2029. CAMINO-2 is supported with ERDF co-financing of up to 60% of eligible costs. The total budget amounts to €4,615,394.

Co-funded by the European Union / Interreg North-West Europe.
